The Aledo Ladycats ended their lead-up to district play this week with a match that looked like it was going to be a sweep — before it became a battle.
On Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Ladycats hosted Waco Midway.
The two teams played fairly evenly in the first set.
After falling behind 0-2, the ‘Cats rebounded, going up 5-4 and spending much of the set trading points.
The lead changed hand a number of times until, after trailing 19-20, sophomore outside hitter Lauryn Mack sent home a kill, and the Ladycats took it home, ending the set 25-21.
Midway looked lackluster in the second set, and the Ladycats dominated, putting together several runs.
Behind 0-1, the ‘Cats scored five straight to go up 5-1. After another three-point run, the Ladycats, up 8-4, put together a five-point run to lead 13-4.
After two points by Midway, Aledo put together a run of seven points during Alyssa Gonzales’ serve to go up 20-6. The Ladycats took the second set with a convincing 25-9 win.
Midway, however, did not go quietly, and led throughout the third set until Aledo scrambled back to go up 8-7.
The lead changed a couple of times until Aledo appeared to be headed for a sweep, leading 19-13 when Midway called a timeout.
Midway scrambled back, outscoring aledo 9-4 to pull within one point at 23-22, and they took the third set 24-26. Midway also took the fourth set, 21-25, before the Ladycats sealed their victory in set 5, 15-11.
