Lady Eagles look to build under new coach

Sigala leads TCA volleyball into a new age

The Trinity Christian Academy Lady Eagles are looking to continue its strong tradition this season despite a new coach stepping into to lead the program.

Dora Sigala will lead the Lady Eagles this season and with her comes an attitude she hopes permeates all her players in everything they do.

“A lot of what I keep emphasizing this season is to work hard with honor and stay hungry and humble,” Sigala said. “I don’t think we will print that on shirts, but we empathize with it in our gym a lot. I picked this motto because in life you have to be willing to put in the work to get the results.”

The team returns some good players from its team last season as TCA went 18-13 and finished second in its district before losing in the bi-district round.

First team all-district players Alex Ickert returns along with twins Kami and Paisley Jones. Ickert leads the offense as a setter while Kami is a presence at the net as a middle-blocker and Paisley serves as the team’s outside hitter.

The team also returns second team all-district players Taylor Gilliam at middle-blocker and Lyla Kloven at setter.

With this type of talent, Sigala is hoping to run an offensive focused team.

“Our style of play this season will focus on high-tempo offense and aggressive serving,” Sigala said. “We’re prioritizing this because we have strong returning setters/athletic hitters, which allows us to control the pace of the game. Our goal is to run a 6-2 offense to keep our execution consistent and disciplined.”

A 6-2 means the setter comes from the back row, which allows for three hitters across the front row.

Despite returning several players, the Lady Eagles know it will be tough for them to try and compete for a district title.

“I would say that Trinity Christian Lubbock will be our toughest competition for the district title,” Sigala said. “Our district is among one of the toughest 4A TAPPS in the state. Many of these schools are much larger in student population than ours, and they have a history of making it deep into the playoffs even to state with some having state titles. Needless to say, we are ready for the competition and look forward to placing deep into the playoffs.”

However, the team has been characterized as cohesive, collaborative, united and supportive in the early parts of this season. Sigala hopes that if these qualities hold, the season will prove to be a success no matter what happens on the court “When I look back, this season will be successful because we bought into the new culture and we worked unified through hard work, honor, and we stayed humble,” Sigala said.
