Turn over a big rock sometime and you’re likely to see a wide variety of creatures: insects like ants, beetles, crickets, and roly-polies; arachnids like spiders, scorpions, and centipedes; mollusks like slugs and snails; and amphibians like salamanders and toads.
There are human versions of these under-rock dwellers, as well. They typically only associate with their own kind, wallowing in the damp earth excreting hate, resentment, and spite.
One such malignant bigot named Charlie somehow managed to get a Facebook account and found our page. Last week he left some comments on one of our posts which can only be described as vile and contemptible.
Over my 31-plus years publishing this newspaper I have had some pretty bad things said about me. I’m a grown-up. I can take it.
But Charlie decided to spew his venom toward a high school student.
We don’t allow name-calling in any event (this particular column excepted for good reason), but for someone who certainly looks old enough to know better, students from kindergarten through high school are especially off-limits for degrading comments.
We live in a community where the level of excellence exhibited by the students in our schools both in the classroom and in extra-curricular ecents is extraordinary.
They work hard; they dedicate themselves to activities and projects that contribute to their own and others’ quality of life; and they create memories that shouldn’t be soured by neanderthals who must have nothing better to do.
Needless to say, our Facebook feed has been disinfected from Charlie’s comments, and Charlie will never be heard from again on our pages.
We can only hope Charlie and his ilk will crawl back under their rocks and fester in whatever peace they can find, and leave the rest alone.
