Catching Up

Posted

Well, it’s been a while since I wrote anything in these pages and I thought I’d try to catch up a little.

Things have been crazy busy here at TCN what with all the fall activities going on.

I am saddened that we have lost three Aledo institutions lately.

Barbara Smiley, in addition to being the mother of former Mayor Kit Marshall, was a kind and gentle woman.

Barbara was a devout Christian who, in life, lived out her faith.

Likewise, O.C. Dugan was an Aledo institution. I never got a chance to know him real well, but we would exchange greetings at various local events.

He was an ardent supporter of the Aledo Ag Science program, and could always be found at the Aledo Ex Student’s Association dinners at homecoming time.

The person I knew best was Charlie McLain who, like the rest, put his personal faith into action.

When we moved our office (literally, the building was moved) to Pecan Street in 2007, Charlie installed the new breaker box for us.

He was active in Aledo United Methodist Church, where he organized and let uncounted youth mission trips.

He was also a mainstay at Bearcat Valero. I’ll miss walking in and seeing him sitting there having lunch.

And I know they miss him, too.
