The Bearcats (16-3-1 overall) remained atop District 5-5A with a 9-0-1 record entering this week, while Saginaw (10-4-3 overall) was second at 7-2-1. Aledo needed a win or tie this week, or a pair of losses by the Rough Riders, to clinch the district title.
Aledo was playing at home against Granbury, last in the league, at press time. They visit Azle, next to last, on Mar. 13 at 7:15 p.m.
Saginaw was playing at Chisholm Trail (third in district) at press time and hosts Keller Fossil Ridge (fifth) on Mar. 13.
The playoffs begin between Mar. 19-21.
Aledo goalkeeper Drew Vozeh posted his 10th shutout of the season.
Previously, on Mar. 3, the Bearcats won 3-0 at home over Fossil Ridge. Trapper Davis scored a pair of goals with Harrison Kear assisting on both. Colin Moore headed in a throw-in from Trent Newton for another goal.
Vozeh was in goal.
“They were defending with eight and nine players, hoping for a 0-0 tie or a 1-0 victory off a counter attack,” Bearcats coach Derek Vierling said. “It made it very difficult to score, even after our second early in the second half.
“Drew (Vozeh) made an incredible save at the end of the game to keep them scoreless.”
The Bearcats have outscored their opponents in district 42-1.
With wins of 3-1 at Fossil Ridge on Mar. 3 and 7-0 over Saginaw at home on Mar. 5, the Aledo Ladycats (11-7-1 overall) secured a spot in the postseason with an 8-1-1 record in District 5-5A. However, this week would decide whether they win the league championship and it could come down to a season-ending showdown at home.
Right behind the Ladycats in district is Azle at 8-2 and Granbury at 7-2-1. Aledo was visiting Granbury at press time and ends the regular season on Mar. 13 at home against Azle.
In the victory against Fossil Ridge, Addison Clark, Kendall Holcomb, and Alexa Plantz each scored a goal, while Holcomb and Jordan Wright registered assists.
The win over Saginaw was the Ladycats’ 10th of the season and their seventh in eight games. Haley Mourer was the goalkeeper.
Six players scored goals for Aledo, led by Ainslee Elmore with two. Baylee Velarde, Eden Anderson, Kylee Vandiver, Hazel Jane Wood, and Ally Weimer scored one each.
Like the boys, the girls playoffs begin Mar. 19-21.
