Aledo teams compete at Goben Invitational

Weather, technical difficulties create challenges

Along with the usual challenges of other opponents, the Steve Goben Invitational in Burleson was disrupted by weather and technical difficulties on Mar. 5.

Field events were canceled altogether. Also, the results of a few running events were unavailable because the timing system malfunctioned and results were unofficial.

Among the events that were official, however, the Ladycats placed third in the always-tough field, while the Bearcats were fourth in their division.

Holland Gladchuk led all Aledo competitors, taking first place in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. She also placed third in the 800 - won by teammate Mykel Murry (who also captured silver in the 400).

Noah Lay won the lone gold medal for the Bearcats, capturing gold in the 800.

It was the second top-three finish for the Ladycats this season. They were second in the season opener at Argyle, followed by a fourth-place finish at Northwest.

“These girls are incredible. They are working hard and improving each week,” Ladycats coach Mike Pinkerton said.

The Ladycats were missing two of their runners, as Sofia Brandenburg and Molly Garrison were competing in the Bluebonnet Relays at Texas A&M, one of the nation’s elite meets.

This was the best finish of the season for the Bearcats, who finished sixth in each of their first two meets.

“Good meet for us, times are dropping. Got some kids from basketball and that is going to help us,” Bearcats coach Andrew Clark said. “Just have to keep getting faster for the district meet.”

Aledo was hosting the Bearcat Relays at press time. Then, after spring break, they are competing in the Weatherford Roo Relays on Mar. 26.
