Once again the area will be well-represented at the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Summer Games of Texas as the Weatherford and Walsh Wahoos swim teams had strong showings at the recent TAAF Region IV Meet in Southlake.
Weatherford is expected to send 52 swimmers to state, while Walsh is expecting to send 10.
The top four in each event for ages 14 and under automatically qualified for state. For swimmers age 15 and over, there is no qualifying for state and it is up to them as to whether they want to make the trip.
“We did very well at regionals. The kids performed great, came home with a lot of personal best times, and a lot of state qualifiers!” said an excited Weatherford assistant coach Matt Williams.
Leading Weatherford qualifiers was Cullen Costello in eight events. He posted five top-four finishes in the Males 15-17 age group, including a gold medal, three silvers, a bronze, and two fourth-place finishes. He also qualified with two silver medals on relays in the Mixed 15-17 age group.
Also for Weatherford, Charlotte Borme qualified in five events in the Females 13-14 age group, including two silver medals, a bronze, and two fourths.
Rebekah Berg, swimming in the Females 9-10 division, won three gold medals, the most by any local swimmer in the meet. She also captured a bronze.
As a team, Weatherford finished fourth with 2,115.50 points. Walsh was eighth with 412 points.
Leading Walsh was Sky Austin, who qualified in three events with silver medals in each in the Females 8-Under division.
The TAAF Summer Games of Texas are July 30-Aug. 2 in College Station.
