Long-time journalist Richard Nelson has been named the new editor at The Community News in Aledo.

Nelson started his newspaper career as a sports reporter at his hometown newspaper, The Baytown Sun, in 1983. Throughout his career, he has held roles as news reporter, editor, advertising sales rep, and publisher.

Most recently, Nelson was executive editor at the Hyde Media Group, owner of the Hood County News.

“I love community newspapering,” Nelson said. “I’ve known of The Community News and Randy (Keck, owner and publisher) for several years through my work with the Texas Press Association. I’m looking forward to working to continue the tradition of excellence.”

Nelson will assist Keck in working with the reporters to make sure the events and stories across Parker County are covered accurately and thoroughly. He’ll also lend a hand in coverage where needed.

Keck will continue as publisher of The Community News, overseeing all operations of the newspaper.

“I am thrilled to have Richard on board,” Keck said. “Having a robust community newspaper is essential for community cohesion and identity, healthy local government, and for sharing of reliable, vetted information. Richard will be instrumental to our success in that role.”

Acknowledging his newness to the area, Nelson said he welcomes readers to reach out to him with story ideas. His email address is rnelson@community-news.com.

“I can already see this is a dynamic area with lots going on,” Nelson said. “I am looking forward to getting out and about and meeting everyone.”

Nelson’s community involvement has included chambers of commerce and other business organizations, service organizations, and school booster clubs.

He and his wife, Kathy, live in Granbury, where Kathy works. They have three grown children and eight grandchildren – four of whom live in Arlington.
