Sometimes it’s okay for a performer to be StageStruck — as in when they are participating in the Theatre Off The Square summer camp of the same name for youngsters.

This is the 13th year for the camps, which not only gives campers in grades 1-9 training in aspects of theatre arts, but gives them a sense of camaraderie. They also strive to educate the entire community about the craft.

“This most definitely includes the youth,” said Laurie Jones, Director of StageStruck Theatre Academy.

While there are now many theatre camps available in the area, Jones said StageStruck is still unique in the way they schedule the classes in the three weeks that they utilize for this event. Also, she noted the price is also very affordable ($125 per camper), and the funds go right back to the theatre to accomplish more events to educate the community.

Alongside theatre skills, Jones said campers benefit from being told that they can be who they are without any worry about bullying or unfavorable situations. The theme this year is “Time to Shine.”

“We want them to learn, of course, but this is a place to shine and not be shy. We have experienced instructors who will guide the campers to grow intellectually and emotionally in order to feel successful,” she said. “We have had so many campers through the years who have come in so very quiet and shy, but then blossom and become who they are meant to be.”

The camps also often introduce youths to a world they might not otherwise have found.

“The world of theatre is fascinating, wondrous, and allows one to explain life through the art of performance. Where else might this happen?” Jones said. “So, theatre camp brings this wonderment down to a child’s level and allows youth to grow in the knowledge of performance and creativity. And as they grow, they are learning about all aspects of life.”

Once introduced to that world, many have made being part of TOTS a regular thing. Many former or current campers have been cast in TOTS productions throughout the years, as well as, some who have been on production staffs, including backstage crew or front of house volunteers.

“Many have returned each year until they age out of camp and then come back as helpers,” Jones said. “With their new knowledge, many have auditioned for our productions or productions at other theatre companies and/or become part of production staffs.”

It’s not uncommon for the camps to spark an interest in the parents of the youths attending.

“Absolutely! Our youth production especially allows for participation from family members in areas of construction, costumes, backstage crew, front of house volunteers, etc.,” Jones said. “Therefore, through the experience of participating, some parents have come to audition for our productions. We just become one big creative family!”

Each camp session ends with a showcase presented by the youngsters. This is free to the public.

“This time, which is usually from 30 to 45 minutes, is one which allows the campers to show what they have learned that week,” Jones said. “This may include something physical — like a costume made during the costuming class — or a small play, an explanation, or dancing or singing. It just depends on what the campers and instructor decide to present.”

Jones said there is generally not a limit for each class. However, the instructor may wish to limit the number because of a limitation of space.

“We just adjust accordingly,” she said.

The deadline to register is technically June 8, but Jones said that deadline can extend if need be. Contact Jones at 817-917-1689 or email her at laurie@theatreoffthesquare.org.
