Tennis: Racquet Cats off to another solid start

As is usual this time of year, the Aledo Racquet Cats are off to a strong start in the high school tennis season. After winning their District 5-5A opener 18-1 at Brewer on Tuesday, Aug. 19, followed by a non-district 15-4 win at Denton, their overall record stood at 10-2.

The doubles were played in pro sets, with the first team to win eight games capturing the match. The singles were played in the traditional format with the first player to win at least six games winning the set and matches being best of three sets.

The Racquet Cats dominated the Bears. They swept girls doubles, girls singles and boys singles, along with capturing the mixed doubles match, all in convincing style.

In all, Aledo won 197 games compared to just 33 for Brewer. Among the matches Aledo won, the Bears took no more than four games, with the Racquet Cats sweeping five and holding Brewer to a single win in four others.

Denton only fared a little better, winning two matches in boys singles, one in boys doubles and one in girls singles.

Six Aledo players were 4-0 in their matches over the two meetings. For the girls, they were Sydney Byrd, Lila Satterfield, McKinley Hayes and Kjersten Loy. Among the boys they were Alex Vozeh and Noah Nottingham.

The Racquet Cats were hosting Granbury at press time. They will also host Birdville on Sept. 2 at 4 p.m.
