AWARDS

Brock players honored

Several athletes from the Brock Eagles baseball team and Lady Eagles softball teams received state accolades recently. 

The Eagles had three players honored by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. Named Class 4A All-State were senior pitcher Evan O’Connor, elite team; junior catcher Braxton Roberts, first team; and senior shortstop Canyon Lightfoot, second team.

O’Connor was also selected to play for the North Team in the 2A-4A All-Star Game in Round Rock.

The Eagles also had four players to the Class 4A Division II All-State Tournament Team by the University Interscholastic League, Roberts and O’Connor (first base), along with junior third baseman Asher Strait and senior outfielder Cade Vidal.

The Lady Eagles had three players selected for the 4A Division II All-State Tournament Team, all freshmen, catcher Kymber Dodson, along with outfielders Trinity Franklin and Jayci Smith.

Both teams finished as state runners-up. The Eagles were 32-7, falling to Waco Robinson in the championship game, while the Lady Eagles were 32-11 and fell to Liberty in the title game.

Brock fourth in Lone Star Cup standings

Brock finished fourth in the University Interscholastic League Lone Star Cup standings among Class 4A teams. The award reflects outstanding performances in academics, athletics and other extracurricular activities.

BASEBALL

Barnes all-star MVP

Landon Barnes, a recent graduate and member of the back-to-back state champions (2025-26) Aledo Bearcats, was named the MVP of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Class 5A-6A All-Star Game. The game was played in Round Rock.

Aledo’s Belyeu stands out

Former Aledo Bearcat Max Belyeu is No. 5 on Baseball America’s Hot Sheet coming off a torrid week for the Spokane Indians, a High A minor leagues affiliate with the Colorado Rockies. In six games he hit five home runs, drove in seven runs, scored eight runs, walked four times and had an on-base/slugging percentage of 1.000.

Waid an All-American

Ty Waid of Weatherford College has been named to the NJCAA All-American second team as a designated hitter. This marks the ninth All-American honor for WC in the 2025-26 academic year and the fifth consecutive year for the Coyote baseball team. The nine honors are a school record.

Waid tied for seventh in the nation with 28 home runs, matching the WC school record set by Robin Villeneuve. Waid will continue his career in the SEC at the University of Missouri next year.

Hansen camp set

July 12 is the date for the second annual Hayden Hansen Elite Skills Camp at Weatherford High School. The camp has two sessions, with grades 2-5 going from 9-11 a.m. and grades 6-8 going from noon-2 p.m.

GOLF

Aledo tryouts set

Tryouts for the 2026-27 Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats golf teams will be July 31 at 10 a.m. at Squaw Creek Golf Course. Cost is $20 per participant.

Those attending must:

  • Have a physical on file in RankOne or bring a hard copy.
  • Have last year’s grades and report card.
  • Bring your own golf clubs.
  • Wear collared shirts.
  • Have a knowledge of the game and rules.
  • Have your own water bottle.

The tryouts will include:

  • Short game evaluations.
  • Long game evaluations on driving range.
  • Playing nine holes walking.
  • Golf etiquette.
  • Commitment to the team for keeping up grades, travel to competition and practice.

WHS tryouts

Girls July 29, boys July 30 at Canyon West Golf Club. Participants need to bring:

  • $20 green fee (cash or check.
  • Water bottle.
  • Copy of last year's report card.

Also:

  • Wear a collared shirt (no T-shirts or denim).
  • Have a completed physical on file in Rank One.

Format:

  • Skills testing (driving, irons, short game, putting).
  • Evaluation of golf skills, knowledge of rules and etiquette.

NTPGA

Henze wins in Burleson

Ainsley Henze of Aledo won the Girls 13-14 age group in the Metro Tour competition of a Northern Texas PGA Junior Tournament at Hidden Creek Golf Course in Burleson recently. She had an 18-hole score of 92.

In that same tournament, in the Boys 11-12 division, Christian Ziegler of Aledo tied for fourth with a 79, while Weatherford’s Grady Gilliam was fourth among Boys 13-14 with an 84. Ziegler also placed fifth in a tournament at Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas, shooting an 83.

SOFTBALL

Former Ladycat a national champion

Former Aledo Ladycat Brenlee Gonzales is a national champion. She is a member of the Texas Longhorns, who repeated as winners of the Women’s College World Series, defeating her former team, Texas Tech.

Gonzales was 2-0 for UT in 2026, striking out 17 and walking nine with a 3.10 ERA in 20.1 innings. As a freshman in 2025 she was 2-0 at Tech, posting a 2.81 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 12 innings.

TENNIS

Cardoso an All-American

Matteo Cardoso of Weatherford College has been named a 2026 International Tennis Association All-American, finishing the season ranked No. 8 in the final ITA National Singles Rankings, the only Region V player in the top 10. 

VOLLEYBALL

Aledo Volleyball Club Summer Camp

The Aledo Volleyball Club Ultimate Athlete Summer Camp is scheduled for July 6-31 for ages 5-12. Sessions are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m.-noon. Cost is $350.

Campers will experience:

  • Learning fundamentals of multiple sports.
  • Staying active all summer long.
  • Building confidence, coordination, and friendships.
  • A fun, energetic environment.

AVC Mini-season

Aledo Volleyball Club will host its Bruisers Mini-Season July 11, 18, 25 and Aug. 1. Sessions are:

  • Grades 1-2, 9-10 a.m.
  • Grades 3-4, 10:15-11:15 a.m.
  • Grades 5-6, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
