Pair of Bearcats commit
Two members of the Class 5A Division I state champion Aledo Bearcats have committed to play in college. Landon Barnes has signed with Weatherford College and Will Cayce committed to Murray State.
Area teams among state rankings entering season
As the high school football season gets underway, Parker County has two teams ranked in the top five of their respective classifications.
The Aledo Bearcats, who are seeking a 13th state championship, are No. 1 in Class 5A Division. Brock, which moved up to 4A last season, is No. 4 in Class 4A Division II.
The Bearcats open the season at home on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. against Denton Guyer, which is No. 15 in Class 6A. The Eagles will also open at home against fellow perennial power Decatur on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
Sharing tough districts
Once again the No. 1 Aledo Bearcats will be sharing a tough district as Denton Ryan, No. 3 in the state, is also in the league. The teams met twice last season, with the Bearcats rallying from a 19-point deficit for a 42-27 win at home, while Ryan ended their season, 31-21, in the state quarterfinals on a neutral site.
This season’s meeting is Oct. 3 at Ryan.
In District 3-4A Division II, the No. 4 Brock Eagles and No. 10 Graham are on a collision course on Oct. 31. They split their games last season, with the Steers winning 38-0 at home and the Eagles winning 12-10 on a neutral field in the state quarterfinals.
The Eagles were ousted in the semifinals the next week by eventual state champion Carthage.
