Sheriff issues scam warning

Posted

The Parker County Sheriff’s Office has seen a recent uptick in scam and fraud complaints.

Parker County Sheriff Russ Authier said fraudulent callers are contacting citizens by phone seeking payments for outstanding warrants or for missing jury duty.

These are scam attempts and may appear to be legitimate. Criminals are fraudulently attempting to gain payment or access to your bank account and personal information. Some complainants reported unknown suspects make contact by phone claiming the sheriff’s office has issued a warrant for the victim’s arrest as a result of missing jury duty. The scammer then requires payment from the victim in order to “clear” the arrest warrant from the system. Certain victims reported their caller ID has been “spoofed” to appear that the call is coming from the sheriff’s office main phone line.

Sheriff Authier encourages the public to remain aware and educated of scams and to take precautions when making purchases or transactions online, though social media advertisements, and over the phone.

Sheriff’s Office personnel will never seek payment for outstanding warrants, missing jury duty, or citations. Sheriff’s personnel serves warrants in person — it does not notify individuals of active warrants by phone.

“We urge citizens to educate themselves on possible scams,” Sheriff Authier said. “Do not give payment information to any person who contacts you unsolicited. When in doubt, get the caller’s name, hang up, and contact your local law enforcement agency. Verify all suspicious claims before making any type of transaction.”
