Aledo will have a secondhand bookstore soon, as the Friends of the Aledo Public Library prepare to open Second Story Books at 213 Mesquite Street in downtown Aledo.
The first quarterly meeting of the Friends group in 2026 was held at the newly leased store front. Those in attendance had the opportunity to walk through the store and see the spacious upstairs room, which can be used to hold events in support of the library as well as made available for rent to public or private groups.
Plans are underway to install bookcases, tables, and chairs. After that, they plan to start shelving the many gently used and new books which have been donated. Tentative operating hours will be Tuesday – Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Friends are seeking volunteers to help staff the bookstore, and anyone interested in donating some time can do so by emailing their name, contact information, and availability to friendsofaledolibrary@gmail.com.
As a nonprofit run store, volunteering at the bookstore would also be a way for students to fulfill community service requirements.
The Friends hosted a successful Scholastic Book Fair in December, which coincided with Christmas Tyme in Aledo. There was discussion about holding similar events in the future to raise money for the library. The purpose of the Friends of Aledo Public Library, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, is to provide financial support for programs, activities, books, and equipment not provided by city appropriations. Proceeds from the bookstore will help support this mission.
To request information about renting the event space, donating books, becoming a member of the Friends of Aledo Public Library, or volunteering, email friendsofaledolibrary@gmail.com.
