Kale Roberson knows that feeling. The Aledo High swimmer set a meet record in the inaugural Ivonen/Lane Invitational hosted by the Arlington School District at the AISD Natatorium on Dec. 13.
Then, he went back and topped that mark.
Roberson won the boys 100-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 48.19 seconds, faster than anyone had ever finished it in the meet’s history. A little while later he posted a time of 47.39 on his leg of the 4x100 relay.
Ironically, the relay was disqualified. However, his time still stands, Aledo coach Meghan Roberson said.
The meet is named after retired Arlington ISD swim coaches Jon Ivonen and Cindy Lane.
“The Ivo-Lane Meet was especially important for us to attend as it honors Jon Ivonen, one of our incredible and dedicated guest teachers here at AHS,” Roberson said. “Ivonen was a very successful swim coach at Martin High for many years and now spends his time helping in Aledo. It was important for us to be a part of this meet and to show our appreciation for coach Ivonen.”
In all, Aledo swimmers brought home five medals for top-three finishes. This breaks down to one gold, a silver and three bronze medals. In addition, they narrowly missed two more medals with fourth-place finishes.
After the holiday break, Aledo swimmers will hold Senior Night at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center on Jan. 8. The District 5-5A Meet is Jan. 24.
