Perry Leigh Cheatham, 86, of Weatherford peacefully passed away at home surrounded by family on July 28.
A graduate of Tioga High School in 1957, Perry began his career in data processing before moving on to General Dynamics (now Lockheed). In 1966, he joined Bell Helicopter as a buyer, where he dedicated 38 years before retiring. He served as President of the local UAW 317 for 20 consecutive years, a record for any elected president. Perry was a respected adviser in company-union negotiations and was valued for his expertise in four retiree programs at Bell. He also contributed to Community Action Programs (CAP) for employee families and friends at Bell.
After retiring, Perry faced a life-altering incident when he was struck in the face by a stray 9mm bullet, but he remained undeterred and continued to stay active. In his later years, Perry was well-known for his joyful singing in the choir at Northside Baptist Church, where he raised his hands in praise. He loved singing and worshiping God, and his deep faith was evident in his heart.
Perry embraced life with enthusiasm. He enjoyed staying active by visiting the Senior Center, playing cards, participating in bingo, and sharing lunch there whenever possible, or sometimes dining at the Center of Hope. His beloved dog, Oliver, was his constant companion, and Perry cherished him immensely. They took daily walks together, keeping both of them in great shape.
He is survived by his son, Michael Wayne Cheatham of Weatherford, and Debra Jane (Debbie) Cheatham Gray Thompson, also of Weatherford. Perry is also remembered by his three sisters: Jewel Ann (Jan) Cheatham Lynch of Weatherford, Frankye Cheatham Jones of Valley View, and Myrtle Chloe (Myrt) Cheatham Vannoy and her husband James of Collinsville. Additionally, he leaves behind a sister-in-law, Beverly Cheatham of Allen, two grandsons, Dustin Tubbleville of Weatherford and Noah Leigh Gray of Georgia, four great-grandchildren — Nathan, Abby, Michael, and Cameron — as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Perry was preceded in death by his son, Gary Leigh, his brother, John Cheatham of Allen, and his parents, Ruth and Hulin Cheatham of Tioga.
Perry will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A service was held on Aug. 5 at Northside Baptist Church, with burial in Tioga.
