It was a night of fond farewells and hearty welcomes Monday as the Weatherford ISD Board of Trustees said goodbye to outgoing president Mike Guest and introduced a new head football coach and also new athletic director.

“Y’all know I love talking but not about me,” an emotional Guest said prior to the start of the meeting. “I’m thankful to my family for allowing me [the time to serve] and to the community for trusting me.”

After a small reception and plaque presentation by Superintendent Dr. Beau Rees, who called Guest “the most genuine man who truly cares about kids” who served for 12 years, trustees got down to business and welcomed Marshall Williams as the next Kangaroos head football coach.

Williams brings more than two decades of experience with him, most recently serving as the offensive coordinator at Lovejoy High School in Allen. Prior to that, he was head coach and boys athletic coordinator at Timber Creek High School, which made multiple postseason appearances.

“I’m going to work very hard to give the Weatherford community what it deserves,” Williams said. “My family and I are extremely happy to call this our new home.”

At Brewer, Williams played a part in championship-caliber teams and also coached at Southlake Carroll and Cedar Ridge. Williams earned his bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University and an associate degree from Eastfield Community College.

In a press release, Scott Curran, the new WISD athletic director who was also in attendance at Monday’s meeting, welcomed Williams to “Roo Nation.”

“We are excited to welcome Coach Williams to Weatherford ISD,” he said. “He is a proven leader who understands how to build a program the right way, which is through discipline, relationships, and a commitment to excellence both on and off the field. We believe he is the right person to lead our football program forward.”

Curran took over as AD earlier this month and most recently served as Assistant Director of Athletics for Northwest ISD. He replaces Aubrey Sims, who left to take a position at Alvarado ISD.

Also at the meeting, trustees approved a request from Dr. Jason Dunkelberger, Director of Transportation, to purchase up to 40 school buses at auction between April and August from Lewisville ISD.

Dunkelberger explained that the buses meet the SB 546 three-point seat belt requirements and are less expensive than full replacement. He expected WISD could get the buses for $65,000 per bus, sell the district’s existing 2017 buses at up to $45,000 each, bringing the cost to about $20,000 each.

The initial request was for $1.5 million but trustee Wally Wallace made the recommendation to authorize up to $2 million to allow for variances in the expected auction price so there would be no restrictions if the buses went for more than what was projected.

“I am out to get 40 buses, not spend every penny,” Dunkelberger assured board members.

The measure passed unanimously.
