The Aledo Ladycats won the championship at their first tournament of the season at Mansfield last week on Aug. 13-15.
The Ladycats went a perfect 9-0, dropping only two sets all tournament on their way to the title, along with several players earning all-tournament honors and one earning a career milestone.
The Ladycats tournament started off on the right note. On the first day Aledo nearly lost its first set against Whitehouse (29-27) before dominating the second (25-8) to take the first match. Richland (25-11, 25-15) and Burleson Centennial (25-15, 25-13) fell much easier.
The second day was a bit tougher. After easily dispatching Birdville (25-16, 25-12) Colleyville-Heritage took the first set off the Ladycats before they rebounded to win in three sets (25-21, 21-25, 25-19). El Paso Eastwood gave Aledo two tough sets, but the Ladycats came out on top in both (25-21, 25-22) to finish the group stage undefeated.
Aledo played in the Championship Bracket on the final day. The Ladycats swept through Abilene Wylie (25-22, 25-11) and Keller Timber Creek (25-16, 27-25) to reach the championship match against Mansfield Lake Ridge. Despite dropping the second set 25-21, the Ladycats won the first and third sets by the score of 25-15 to win the match and the championship.
Kaelee Berkley led the team with 86 kills during the tournament and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Avery Pipkins was second with 53 kills and was named to the all-tournament team along with libero Karsyn Evans who totaled 162 digs. Evans also passed a career milestone during the tournament of 1,000 career digs.
