Ladycats start district play

Aledo beats Brewer 5-0

Posted

The Aledo Ladycats softball team started off district play on Tuesday with a home win against Brewer.

The Ladycats beat the Lady Bears 5-0 in a one-sided outing as Aledo begins its next step towards its ultimate goal of winning it all.

Tempe Perry got the start on the mound and responded from giving up a one-out double by striking out the next two batters in the first inning. When the Ladycats got to bat, Delaney Rosser led off with a walk that would pay off. Following a sacrifice bunt that moved her to scoring position, Kyleigh Pawlak drove her in with a single into left field to put Aledo up 1-0.

After a one-two-three inning from the Ladycats’ defense in the second inning, the bats got back to work. Brylee Gray drew a one-out walk. She advanced to second on a ground out and then Jordyn Edington came up and drove her in on a single up the middle. Aledo led 2-0.

Brewer was able to threaten in the third inning with a one-out single and then a two-out walk, but Perry was able to induce a ground out to the shortstop for out three to escape clean. Perry then led off the inning with her bat, hitting a double and Rylee Marx later drew a two-out walk, but the Ladycats could not get either home.

In the fourth inning the Lady Bears led off with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved the base runner into scoring position, but Perry fielded a weak hit ball and got the easy out at first to put out another fire.

Gray led off for Aledo with a single blooper hit into the outfield. A sacrifice bunt and then a missed tag by the third baseman moved her prime scoring position. Rosser drove her in with a single to make it 3-0.

The Ladycats defense had a quick fifth inning allowing no baserunners. Brooklyn Taloa led off for Aledo and took Brewers replacement pitcher for a ride out of the park on the first pitch she saw. The Ladycats led 4-0 moving to the sixth inning.

Aledo defense had an even faster one-two-three inning, with Perry throwing only five pitches in total. On offense, Edington drew a walk with one out. She later stole second base and because of an error on the throw she was able to advance to third base. Perry then drove her in with single to put the Ladycats up 5-0 heading into the final inning.

Brewer showed some life, drawing a one-out walk to try and spark a rally. Next batter then hit a line drive right to first baseman Taloa who caught it and tagged the base to get the game sealing double-play.

Aledo finished with with eight hits and drew five walks in the game. Rosser and Perry each had two hits to lead the team while five different players all finished with one RBI each for a balanced spread of offense.

On the mound, Perry got the complete game shutout, giving up only three hits while striking out five and walking two. Her defense behind her had no fielding errors on the night.

Coach Heather Myers liked the solid way her team came out and did its business. With district play starting and every game counting towards a playoff seeding, she implored her team to adopt a killer mindset.

“All gas, no breaks,” Myers said. “Put your foot on their throats and don’t let up. When district starts we turn up the tempo and I think we saw that.”

It was a good showing after a challenging weekend.

Turf Wars

The Ladycats were coming off an up and down showing playing in the brutally-tough Turf Wars tournament Feb. 26-28.

There Aledo lost to Melissa 5-0 on the first day before reeling off two wins on the second day against Argyle (5-1) and Abilene (8-0). Unfortunately, the Ladycats ended the tournament with two, one-run losses against Timber Creek (6-5) and Grapevine (4-3).

Myers was still playing with lineups and giving all players valuable playing experience. That along with playing some of the toughest competition they have seen led to the 2-3 record.

“Overall we went 2-3 in the tournament, but I was proud of them,” Myers said. “We got down 6-0 and ended up losing 6-5. I don’t mind those losses because it shows we are competing. As long as we are not getting down and learning how communicate with each other, learning how to be better teammates in the dugout and on the field, I saw lots of growth.”

Aledo continues district play on the road this week, traveling to Rockwall Heath High School to play at 6:30 p.m. on March 6 and then to Chisholm Trail High School at 7 p.m. on March 10.
