Ladycats second, Bearcats fourth in tourneys

The Aledo Ladycats made a second day charge to finish second at the Granbury Lady Pirates Invitational played at Harbor Lakes Golf Club in Granbury on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2.

After an opening round of 349, the Ladycats improved by a dozen strokes on Day 2 to finish at 337 for a two-day total of 686, behind only Mansfield.

Karlee Shaw led the Ladycats, shooting a 164 (83-81), with Emily Crick next at 171 (90-81). Also for Aledo, Reagan Gilliland shot 175 (88-87), Kyla Morales posted a 176 (88-88) and Kennedi Parker shot 186 (99-87), which included the best single day improvement from Day 1 to Day 2.

The four lowest scores in each round comprise the team score.

"I am proud of the girls for bouncing back on Day 2 after a bad Day 1. Karlee Shaw, a sophomore, played well, and I am glad that she is getting results from the work she is putting in practice," Ladycats coach Brian Mourning said. "With the region that we’re in this year, the girls are going to have play great on both days to be able to stay up with those teams that are out there.  

"We’ve shown we can play well, we just need to play well from the get-go and not fall too far behind after Day 1.  We have some time to work on being more consistent with playing well on both days."

The Ladycats' next tournament is the District 5-5A Preview on March 27 at Sugar Tree Golf Club, with the district tournament on the same course April 4-5.

Bearcats fourth in Glen Rose

The Bearcats competed in the Dinosaur Classic at Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose March 1-2. They finished fourth with a two-day total of 593.

The Bearcats opened with a 299 and followed with a 294.

Jett Moore paced the Bearcats with a two-day total of 144 (71-73), followed by Gavin Beard with a 148 (75-73). Braden Stokes came in at 150 (75-75), Helton Mossiello shot 151 (78-73) and Ethan Elmore came in at 158 (81-77).

"Jett had an unfortunate tee ball that on 18 that put him in tough position to finish out Day 1.  That led him to lose a couple strokes on Day 1.  Helton and Braden played well, but both felt like they left several strokes out there, especially on the greens," Mourning said. "Gavin Beard has been playing well since he came out of football in December and shot in the mid to low 70s in every tournament we have played in. Ethan is starting to come around and be more consistent and starting to show he has potential to shoot low.  

"We have several other guys that are in the program that could help us out as district gets closer.  One of goals is to get both teams out of district, and we need all 10 of those guys to be playing well when the district tournament gets here on April 1-2 (at Sugar Tree)."

Also on the team are Tyler Anderson, Cade Moore, Brian Yarbrough, Grayson Freeman, William Kirkman and Johnnie Reed.

The Bearcats Black team is in the Region I Preview at Hillcrest Golf Course in Lubbock March 18. The District 5-5A Preview will feature both the Black and Orange teams on March 20 and both will compete in the district tournament.
