Ladycats run shutout streak to three

Stay atop of league standings with tie

Posted

It’s hard to lose a soccer game if the opponent can’t score against you - and lately opponents have not been able to find the goal against the Aledo Ladycats.

However, the third straight shutout by the Ladycats resulted in them also not being able to get the ball into the net. Still, the Ladycats retained first place in District 5-5A with a 4-0-1 record (7-6-1 overall) as they played to a scoreless tie at home against Granbury (9-5-2, 2-1-2) on Feb. 13.

Haley Mourer posted the shutout as goalkeeper.

It was the third consecutive shutout by the Ladycats. This was preceded by a 6-0 victory at Saginaw (2-9, 0-5) on Feb. 10, again with Mourer in goal.

“I’ve been very impressed with how our defense has grown. Three shutouts in a row doesn’t happen by accident,” Ladycats coach Taylor May said. “They’ve been disciplined, patient, and composed under pressure. It’s a total team effort, and they’re buying into the standard we expect.

“We have moved some people around and found who works best for us in those positions.”

Ally Weimer had a hat trick (three goals) against Saginaw, while Kendall Holcomb had a pair of goals and Baylee Velarde also scored. Jordan Wright had two assists, with Weimer and Addison Clark also assisting.

The Ladycats were wrapping up the first half of district at Azle (9-7-2, 3-1-1) at press time and visit Brewer (7-8-1, 3-3) on Feb. 20 at 7:15 p.m. to start the second half. They defeated the Lady Bears 5-1 at home on Jan. 31.

They are home to Saginaw Chisholm Trail (4-11-2, 1-4) on Feb. 27 at 7:15 p.m. This is the last team to score on Aledo as the Ladycats escaped an upset with a 3-2 road win on Feb. 3.
