The Ladycats (6-6 overall) entered this week 3-0 in the league, a half game ahead of Granbury at 2-0-1 (9-4-1 overall).
Ally Weimer and Baylee Velarde scored goals for the Ladycats, the latter off a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Haley Mourer posted the shutout, the Ladycats’ fourth of the season.
“I’m very proud of my girls tonight. We had a clear game plan, and they executed it well while staying patient throughout the match,” Aledo coach Taylor May said. “Fossil Ridge is a strong team and kept it scoreless until the second half, so it was definitely a tough battle.
“Getting the shutout and starting district 3-0 is a credit to our team’s focus and effort.”
The Ladycats jumped out to a three-goal lead and held off a comeback by upset-minded Chisholm Trail (3-10-2, 0-3 in district entering this week).
The early Aledo goals were from Velarde, Weimer, and Avery Sands. Weimer also had an assist, as did Kendall Holcomb and Kylee Vandiver.
“After that, it seemed like everything started to go against us as Chisolm Trail gained momentum from costly mistakes that we made,” May said. “Still, we weathered the storm and came out with an important win.”
The Ladycats were visiting Saginaw (2-7, 0-3) at press time. They host Granbury on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7:15 p.m.
Next week features trips to Azle (8-7-2, 2-1-1) on Tuesday, Feb. 17 and Brewer (6-7-1, 2-2) on Friday, Feb. 20, both games at 7:15 p.m.
