Ladycats pair qualify for regionals

Two members of the Aledo Ladycats wrestling team qualified for this weekend’s Class 5A Region I Tournament at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Feb. 10-11.

Avery Kernan and Kyra Wright, both team captains, each finished fourth in their respective classifications of 107 and 114 pounds. Rilei Blankenship placed fifth in the 138 division and is an alternate.

The top four finishers in each weight class at regionals will advance to state at the Berry Center in Cypress Feb. 17-18.

Kernan overcame a pair of losses to win her final two matches and qualify with a 3-2 overall mark in the District 4-5A Tournament at Azle this past Saturday, Feb. 4. She opened the tournament by defeating Felicity Tarango of Lubbock Estacado in a fall at 4:45.

However, that was followed by Kernan losing twice in falls to Kasi Mittal of Lubbock Cooper in 57 seconds and in 1:21 to Jairy Vazquez of Vernon. Kernan secured her regionals berth by dropping Jordyn Lopez of Lubbock Coronado in a fall at three minutes and defeating Tarango in a rematch in a fall at 1:40.

Wright also went 3-2, beginning the tourney with a pin of Lexi Tayfel of Brewer at 5:28, but then was pinned by Madison Pena of Lubbock in 2:48. She then defeated Keira Buggar of Azle in a 7-1 decision, fell in a fall to Isabella Cardona of Lubbock Monterrey at 2:21 and won a no-contest over Buggar.

“Overall, our girls team wrestled great and we will return ever yone of them next year, so I have high hopes for this group and what we can accomplish next year,” coach Austin Stockon said.

Also wrestling for Aledo:

120 pounds: Serafina Ceron, eighth.

132: Caroline Gartner, sixth.

145: Arianne Mathias, did not place.

185: Baillie Sessom, did not place.
