In their most recent district outings, the Aledo Ladycats basketball team has remained in strong form against foes challenging them for the top seed in District 5-5A Region I. The Ladycats faced off against Saginaw on Friday before hosting Granbury on Tuesday, and these two opponents are the closest to Aledo in the standings. In the end, though, Aledo notched an impressive 68-47 win at Saginaw and followed that up with a 52-15 drubbing of Granbury at home – the Lady Pirates’ first league loss of the season.

Against Saginaw, Brooklyn Dempsey led the charge with 20 points while Kate Jackson poured in 16 in a quality effort. Elizabeth Griffin contributed 13 points to the victory while Jaylee Owens and Tiara Butler had eight and seven points, respectively. At home against Granbury, Dempsey was again the leading scorer with a team-high 17 points while Griffin chipped in with 13. Butler and Owens combined for 13 points.

Impressively, the Ladycats recorded a program sweep in both matches. Along with the varsity victories, the JV and freshman teams earned big respective wins over their opponents. The JV won 53-10 at Saginaw and 52-26 against Granbury. The freshman team rolled to a 62-4 blowout versus Saginaw and defeated Granbury 47-30.

The Ladycats varsity squad (17-7, 5-0) will step onto the hardwood again at 6:15 p.m. Friday at Azle, the start of a stretch where Aledo will play three of its next four district games away from home. The Bearcats (18-6, 4-0) were also victorious over Saginaw (73-55) and Granbury (70-39) but statistics were not reported before press time.
