The Ladycats won 10-0 against the Lady Hornets, though the game went all seven innings as Azle just avoided getting run-ruled.
Aledo was not just undefeated through the first round of district, but was dominant. The Ladycats had run-ruled their last four opponents and had outscored them 65-2 through five games.
Still, the Lady Hornets were ready, with their outfielders moved as far back as possible. That along with some rust meant several hard hit balls into the outfield ended up in Azle outfielder’s gloves, but with the amount put into play, Aledo eventually reached its offensive quota even if it took seven innings instead of three or five like it has been used to.
After a scoreless first inning, Kayleigh Martin put the first run on the board herself, hitting a solo home run over the fence to go up 1-0. It sparked the Ladycats’ biggest inning that came in the third inning.
Brooklynn Taloa hit an RBI double before Rylee Marx, who was pitching a gem on the mound, hit a two-run home run. Later in the same inning, Breleigh Mayer joined her with a two-run home run over the left field fence. Aledo led 6-0.
Despite three home runs, regular hits were harder to string together for the Ladycats. Azle kept switching pitchers every time a string of hits came, which meant Aledo was forced to adjust. Also, many hard-hit fly balls landed in outfielders’ gloves, some that were hit on a rope that would have been doubles or triples if they had just been aimed somewhere else.
It wasn’t until the sixth inning when the Ladycats got on the board again as Delaney Rosser joined the home run club, hitting a solo to lead off the inning, giving Aledo four on the night and making the score 7-0.
In the final inning, the Ladycats were able to string some runs together without the long ball, helped by a costly error in the outfield that an Azle player finally made after making most of the plays all night.
Mayer’s fly ball to right field was dropped and it drove in two runs as she ended up on third base. Next batter Jordyn Edington drove her in as she grounded out to first base.
Marx put the finishing touches on her shutout by fielding a weak hit ball herself for the final out of the game. Aledo won 10-0.
Marx and Mayer each led the team with two RBIs on their home runs. Rosser and Martin’s home run made four on the night. Despite the many fly balls caught, the team still finished with 14 hits as a team, with eight being extra base hits.
Marx finished with 12 strikeouts while allowing only two hits and walking two batters while the defense behind committed no errors.
Coach Heather Myers had little to complain about with how her team played. The team played with a looseness and joy despite some frustrating outcomes on some good hit balls throughout the night.
One of the loudest cheers from the dugout all night was someone getting a younger sibling to chase a foul ball into the parking lot for them so they could then turn it in for Azle’s foul ball for a Froyo promotion. No word on if that turned out to be true.
With Aledo dominating through the first round of district, Myers is not worried this group will have any let downs going through the same teams a second time.
“We don’t ever take anybody for granted,” Myers said. “We know they are going to come out to beat us because of the name on our shirt. We expect that and we prepare for them to be prepared.”
The Ladycats are next scheduled to play at 7 p.m. on March 27 at Brewer and at 7 p.m. on April 2 at home against Chisholm Trail.
