Ladycats edge Centennial to win own relays

Posted

If the Bearcat Relays are any indication of what’s to come, Aledo and Burleson Centennial are going to have a battle for supremacy among District 5-5A girls.

The Aledo varsity girls won a thrilling championship, edging the Lady Spartans 139.75 to 137.75. The Ladycats sealed the victory with a runner-up finish in the 1600-meter relay while Centennial was seventh.

“I was really proud of the girls, both varsity and JV. For the Varsity, any time you can compete with Burleson Centennial, you know you have a strong team,” Ladycats coach Mike Pinkerton said. “They competed really well. The great part was that, since it was our home meet, we were able to run our athletes (boys and girls) who hadn’t been to a meet yet. They ran for no points, but were able to run. Very proud of all of our athletes!”

Sofia Brandenburg and Lauren St. Peters each won a pair of gold medals for the Ladycats, Brandenburg in the 800-meter run and 1600 and St. Peters in the shot put and discus. Sarah Tillotson took the top spot in the 300 hurdles and was second in the 800, while Taylor Hindman won in pole vaulting.

In fact, Aledo had the top four finishers in the pole vault as behind Hindman were Maggie Kilburn, Austyn Johnson and Ansli Lopez.
