The Weatherford Kangaroos rushed for 234 yards and defeated the Burleson Elks 35-21 on the road Friday night, Sept. 8, at Burleson Stadium.

The Kangaroos (2-1) started freshman quarterback Cutter Kennedy due to an injury to senior CJ Thornton last week. Kennedy’s debut went well as he was 14-of-20 for 143 yards with one touchdown and one interception passing, along with 28 yards and one touchdown rushing. 

Running back JoJo Polk scored two touchdowns on 82 yards rushing.

Kennedy got the scoring started with a 1-yard quarterback keeper in the first quarter. McClure followed up with a 6-yard rushing touchdown.

Polk punched it in for a 3-yard touchdown in the second quarter and ran for another score with an 18-yarder in the third quarter.

Kennedy and Will Jordan connected for Weatherford’s only passing touchdown with 4:46 left in the game with a 13-yarder.

Kangaroo linebacker Andrew Groh had a big game with 11 tackles and a sack. Micah Moore registered seven tackles.

The Elks (0-3) threw for only 5 yards on two attempts. Rushing-wise, Nate Jackson rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries for Burleson. 

The game was called with about two minutes remaining due to lightning.

The Kangaroos host 3-0 Crowley in the District 3-6A opener for both teams Friday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Weatherford leads the all-time series 5-2, but lost last season's matchup in Crowley, 31-17.
