Hispanic Heritage 2025

Posted

This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month holds special meaning for our family. Our first grandchild was born this past summer. Callum is half Hispanic, born to my Anglo son, Ian, and my Hispanic daughter in law, Maria Andrea. She is a U.S. citizen, but she was born in Colombia to native Colombian parents. They are some of the finest people you could ever meet.

Hispanic Heritage month is odd in that it is the last half of September and the first half of October. I think that is because the 16th of September is Mexican Independence Day and Dia de la Raza, or Columbus Day, is Oct. 12..

Both Spanish and English are being spoken to Callum. He will be bilingual. He has ties to grandparents and uncles and aunts in Columbia and Costa Rica. He has ties to our numerous Anglo relatives in the United States.

Such interracial intermarriage is becoming more common. Children are being raised to be multicultural.

We have observed that Hispanics have intense family values. All of us have the same family values.

Callum has the books, “Green Eggs and Ham” in English, and “Huevos Verdes con Jamon” in Spanish.

In Central and South America, the Spanish, who are mostly white skinned, intermarried with indigenous people. These unions produced some beautiful children. Callum is a beautiful baby.

I pray that someday, we will be find a peaceful and reasonable solution to the many conflicts we have had with our Hispanic neighbors. I pray for a day when there is no need for walls and barbed wire at our borders, and that we will live in harmony and peace.

I hope Callum will see that solution in his lifetime.
