Five members of the Aledo Bearcats competed in the Fort Worth Junior Golf Association Boys Championship this past week, continuing a string of strong performances over the years.

While there were no individual champions this year from Aledo, Maddox Jessup of the Bearcats had the highest finish of those competing from the program. He tied for second in the third flight of Division I with a four-round score of 320 (73-88-79-80), one stroke out of first place.

He also had the lowest round of any Bearcat in the tournament with his first-day score.

The tournament features four rounds of play on a variety of courses throughout the Fort Worth area. For Division I, in which all five Bearcats played, the first round was played on July 21 at Rockwood Park Golf Course, the second round on July 22 at Ridglea Country Club South Course, and July 23 at Shady Oaks Country Club.

After the second round, a cut was made to divide golfers into three flights, with final round being played at Colonial Country Club.

Defending overall tournament champ Braden Stokes of Aledo was placed in the first flight following the cut. He tied for 10th in the flight with a 314 total (75-82-76-81).

The new overall champion is Matthew Lewis, who defeated Isaiah Diaz and Isaac Diaz after all three shot 292 in the championship flight.

Logan Lund and Will Kirkman of the Bearcats were placed in the second flight. Kirkman placed 10th with a 320 (84-77-75-84) and Lund was 11th with a 322 (74-82-81-85).

Ethan Elmore was also in the third flight, tying for sixth. He posted a score of 326 (84-81-78-83).

A week earlier, a pair of Ladycats won their respective flights in the girls tournament. Sydney Purdon won the second flight in Division I and Kylie Kirkland won the Division II 14-18 age division.

The annual boys and girls championship tournaments traditionally are in July and are free for all participants. There are no entry fees and no greens fees, and courses played include Fort Worth municipals and country clubs.

The tournaments are open to boys and girls ages seven to 18. The boys tournament has been conducted since 1936 and the girls tournament since 1974.
