Gaspar completes Eagle Scout project

Fence constructed around Dawson-Hackett Cemetery

Posted

Alex Gaspar of Boy Scout Troop 75 recently completed his Eagle Scout project of  constructing a fence around the Dawson-Hackett Cemetery located near Hudson Oaks for the Abandoned Cemetery Association (ACA).

Gaspar and his fellow scouts, all from Aledo High School, spent two weekends on the project. Construction, however, was just the final chapter of a multi-step process. Gaspar first had to devise a plan which included a detailed materials list, labor and equipment requirements, and funding. He also had to consider feeding the troops and safety considerations. In other words, he created a comprehensive project plan.

Next, Gaspar presented the plan to a council board which drilled him on various aspects of his proposal before it was approved. He then arranged for materials purchase and gathering materials, equipment, and people for the appointed day to begin work.

This is the third fencing project completed for the ACA by Troop 75. The other two were for Porter Cemetery and the County Poor Farm Cemetery which earned Drew Woodliff his Eagle Scout badge. A representative of the ACA said the group is very pleased to have worked with Scout Troop 75.

“Their efforts go a long way in preserving Parker County’s past, providing the next generation tangible evidence of our forebears, and a better understanding of their place in history,” the representative said. “The ACA congratulates Alex for a job well done, and for his exceptional achievement.”

Gaspar joins a unique group of scouts, as only six percent achieve Eagle status.
