Three former members of the Weatherford Coyotes are now national champions as members of the Oklahoma Sooners. Led by Weatherford High School alum Dayton Tockey, the Sooners disposed of North Carolina 13-2 on Monday, June 22 to win their first national championship since 1994 - which was 43 years after their first title in 1951.
Tockey, a senior outfielder, was joined in winning a College World Series championship ring by fellow former Coyotes Trent Collier, a sophomore pitcher, and Uriah Walters, a junior infielder, both from Prosper.
"The ultimate reward for a coach is to watch your players chase their dreams," former Weatherford College coach Jeff Lightfoot said.
Tockey, in fact, was a key factor in helping the 2023 Coyotes reach the NJCAA Division I World Series and finishing third, posting a program best-ever record of 53-11. In his two seasons at WC (2023-24) the Coyotes were 98-16.
Walters played at WC in 2024-25 and the Coyotes were 93-28. In Collier's one season WC posted a 48-13 record.
Tockey played a major role in OU's championship run. He caught fire at the plate at the same time the Sooners did so in the postseason.
Oklahoma finished the regular season 32-20 and 14-16 in the Southeast Conference. They dropped their SEC Tournament opener to LSU, putting in jeopardy their chances of making the NCAA Tournament.
Tockey ended the regular season with three home runs, three doubles and 10 RBI.
But they did get in, and they made a run for the ages, going 11-2 in the postseason. During that playoff run, Tockey batted .319 with three doubles, six home runs and 13 runs batted in.
Tockey's solo home run in the 10th inning of the championship game of the Atlantic Regional lifted the Sooners to an 8-7 win over Georgia Tech. It was the first walk off home run for Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament since 2008.
"Dayton had a lot of big hits and was a big part of our success at WC. He is now doing the same thing for the Sooners on this epic postseason run," Lightfoot said.
In the CWS clincher against North Carolina, the third game of a best-of-three series, Tockey went 2-for-5 with a home run and RBI.
"It has been great to see Dayton succeed. I am very proud of him for what he has accomplished," Weatherford Kangaroos coach Jason Lee said. "Dayton definitely persevered from injuries in his career to struggling earlier this season.
"Dayton is such a great competitor. He kept battling and believing in himself while being positive in the dugout in or out of the lineup. When he got his chances late in the year he stepped up for his teammates."
Collier made one pitching appearance in the CWS. He pitched one inning in a 6-2 loss to North Carolina, striking out a batter and walking one. He ended the season with a 1-1 record, a 3.80 earned run average, 28 strikeouts and 11 walks in 23.2 innings pitched.'
Walters ended his season appearing in 12 games, two of his three hits were doubles, and he drove in two runs.
