Hejny had been in a battle with Zane Flores for the starting job. Hejny is a redshirt freshman after seeing limited time with TCU last season, while Flores is a third-year redshirt freshman following his receiving of a medical hardship in 2024.
Hejny saw action in four games for the Horned Frogs in 2024, all road games at Stanford, Kansas, Utah, and Cincinnati. TCU was 4-0 in games in which he played, finishing 9-4.
Hejny did not attempt a pass for TCU, whereas Flores has also yet to throw a pass in college. Hejny rushed 15 times for 65 yards last season, while Flores has yet to see any game action.
Hejny’s best game came at Cincinnati, when he had eight carries for 48 yards, including his season-long run of 21 yards. He led the team in rushing that day, and on TCU’s final offensive series of the game, he helped run more than four minutes off the clock by carrying the ball on all six snaps for 35 yards.
Hejny opted to leave TCU and follow assistant coach Doug Meacham, who is now the Oklahoma State offensive coordinator.
During spring practices, the Cowboys had four players competing for the starting quarterback duties. However, Garret Rangel transferred to Virginia Tech and Maealiuaki Smith left for Mississippi.
At Aledo, Hejny led the Bearcats to state championships in 2022 and 2023, ending his high school career with a 30-game winning streak and a 30-2 overall record. He quarterbacked them to their final state championship with Tim Buchanan as head coach as a junior and to Robby Jones’ first state title as head coach as a senior.
