“That was my first year. She hit a 7-iron straight as an arrow,” he recalled. “You just know when you see a kid if they have something special, and I just knew with her.”
His instinct was correct as Crick would go on to post one of the best high school careers for a Ladycat golfer. Earlier this week she competed in her third Class 5A State Tournament in four years.
Crick posted a two-round total of 159, opening with an 81 and finishing with a 78, at the Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown. She finished in a tie for 33rd place out of 72 golfers.
Comal Pieper won the team championship, shooting a 596 (298-298), followed by Frisco Reedy with a 603 (302-301) and San Antonio Alamo Heights at 604 (303-301). The individual title went to Michelle Lee of Alamo Heights with a 137 (70-67) with Joshua’s Haylee Yuan (72-71) and Pieper’s Dresden Bounds (74-69) tying for second with a 143 each.
“I’m glad she came back and shot 78. She’s a tough kid, she’s not about to give up,” Mourning said of Crick. “I’m glad she ended her career on an up note.”
Crick actually began the tournament in solid fashion and was 2 under par through the first seven holes on the first day. Then came home No. 8, which presented problems to plenty of golfers, including Bearcat Braden Stokes a week earlier.
“I don’t know what’s up with No. 8 at Legacy Hills, but it doesn’t like Aledo,” Mourning said.
Crick has committed to play golf at Texas Wesleyan University next season.
“I think she’s going to be successful and do really well. I think she’ll compete for a top-five position,” he said. “She’s played against some great competition over the past four years and done really well against them.
“Getting to state three times in four years shows how good and consistent she is. The high level of play she and Braden have sustained over four years is really impressive.”
Stokes has committed to the play for the University of Texas at Tyler next season.
“She and Braden are leaving quite a mark on this program,” Mourning said. “They will be missed, but they also inspired others coming along behind them. I feel lucky to have had two players like that in my program.”
