The issues Annetta leaders face during council meetings are sometimes complicated and complex. However, each meeting ends with the same, simple act. For years Mayor Sandy Roberts has given away a book each month to an Annetta student, hand picking and purchasing each with her own money.

“What’s the number, Jamie?” Roberts asks as city secretary Jamie Long pokes an app on her phone to bring up a random number while Roberts looks down the list of entries and announces the winner.

The past several months Roberts has been giving away one of the five-volume National Park Mystery Series by Aaron Johnson.

“He used to live in the area and I told him we are giving away his entire collection,” Roberts said after naming the book winner. “I was hoping I could get signed copies from him to give away, but that didn’t happen.”

Information on how to enter the Annetta book drawings is posted regularly on the town’s Facebook page and in email newsletters to the residents.

An item in the middle of the October agenda was pushed to the end of the meeting, and after the book giveaway the council stalled, avoided the subject, and delayed until it had to be addressed. In time, the council reluctantly accepted the resignation of Shane Mudge, place 1.

Mudge was active in the city before becoming a council member in 2014 and was part of the groundbreaking of the City Hall building. He and his family are moving to Colorado. The council honored Mudge with a plaque, a tree to be planted on city grounds in his honor, and cake for family and friends present at the meeting.

“It’s been good. We’ve done a lot of good things,” Mudge smiled and said after a funny and emotional memories slideshow.

Council business

James Falconer was voted to replace Mudge as councilperson place 1. Falconer served on the planning and zoning board since 2023 and was recommended for the council position. His wife, Amanda Falconer, is a global real estate advisor for Briggs Freeman and served on the Annetta Zoning Commission. She was voted to be an alternate of the Annetta Zoning Board of Adjustments at the meeting.

Councilperson Jim Causey happily announced he received word the months of fiber optic cable installment by two companies in the area has concluded and service will be offered soon.

Jessica Brown of Freese and Nichols Infrastructure Consulting presented information on current and future expectations of groundwater usage in Annetta, Parker County, and Texas. As population increases, business increases, and water needs for both go up. Annual water well installations in Parker County have increased from 515 in 2004 to 729 in 2024, for a total of about 14,000 water wells in the county.

Council members Danny Coffman and Kent Stasey commented extensively on the usefulness of knowing what the future holds with the area’s water supply in light of rapid growth in both population and industry and how our attitude toward water usage is part of the big picture for the county and state.
