Jake Bishop is coming home.
After a year coaching at the Weatherford ISD, Bishop has accepted a position as a College and Career Readiness teacher and coach at McAnally Middle School.
Bishop is a former quarterback for the Aledo Bearcats, leading them to state championships in 2018 and 2019, along with a runner-up finish in 2017. He switched to wide receiver when he attended Texas Tech, where he earned his college degree.
“I’m looking forward to building relationships, making an impact, and being a part of such a supportive and forward-thinking district,” Bishop was cited as saying on an Aledo ISD social media post.
Bishop was the Most Valuable Player of the Bearcats’ 2019 45-42 Class 5A Division II state championship win over Fort Bend Marshall. He passed for 244 yards and three touchdowns, along with rushing for 46 yards and another.
A year earlier, Bishop guided the Bearcats to a 55-19 victory against Marshall for the 5A Division II title. He completed 14 of 17 passes for 174 yards and three TD, along with rushing for 69 yards and a score.
The 2018 title was the final game for Steve Wood as coach of the Bearcats, who led them to three titles in five years, including state championships in 2014 and 2015 with Jake’s brother Luke at quarterback. The 2019 championship featured the return of Tim Buchanan as head coach after five years of solely being athletic director (which Wood became after leaving coaching).
The 2019 title was also the ninth in Aledo history, tying them with Katy for the most in Texas at the time. They now have a dozen.
Jake narrowly missed a third state championship. In 2017, the Bearcats lost 20-19 to College Station in the state final.
Between Jake and his brothers, Luke and Matt, they led Aledo to seven state championships. Matt won titles in 2009, 2010, and 2011.
