Bearcats win despite end of shutout streak

Ladycats record another blanking

Posted

After almost six weeks, 11 and a half games, and a little more than 920 minutes of play, the Aledo Bearcats finally surrendered a goal. In the end it mattered little, however, as they won 6-1 at Chisholm Trail on Feb. 27.

The Bearcats (15-3 overall) improved to 8-0 by winning their 13th straight game and clinched a playoff berth. They remain a game ahead of Saginaw (10-3-2, 7-1).

Chisholm Trail (4-12-1, 4-3-1) scored off a free kick that ricocheted off the goalkeeper’s shoulder with 18 minutes remaining to cut Aledo’s lead to 2-1. But the Bearcats went on a 4-0 surge the rest of the way to run away with the win.

“I feel like the team responded perfectly,” Bearcats coach Derek Vierling said.

The Bearcats got goals from six different players, with Kyle Storck scoring the first goal off of an assist from Trapper Davis, who then scored on a penalty kick after being tripped. Evan Randriamahefa followed with a goal off of an assist from Robby Sloan, who then dribbled from midfield for an unassisted goal.

Sloan assisted Grant Cambre and Erik Soltow ended the night with another penalty kick goal.

Drew Vozeh was in goal for the first half for the Bearcats, with Mark Graham in the second.

“Chisholm Trail had been hot since we played them in the first round (an 8-0 Aledo win at home), winning four games and scoring a bunch of goals,” Vierling said. “It was good to see the boys responding to the inevitable goal by immediately scoring four goals in the next 15 minutes.”

The Bearcats were hosting Keller Fossil Ridge (4-7-5, 1-3-4) at press time and travel to Saginaw (10-3-2, 7-1) on Mar. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. contest in which a win would clinch the district championship.

The regular season ends for the Bearcats with a home game against Granbury (4-12-2, 0-6-2) on Mar. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and a trip to Azle (6-13-3, 2-6-1) on Mar. 13 at 7:15 p.m.

The Ladycats (9-6-2 overall) remained undefeated and held onto their slim lead atop the District 5-5A standings at 6-0-2 with a 1-0 home victory against Chisholm Trail (4-15-2, 1-8) on Feb. 27.

Ally Weimer scored the goal and goalkeeper Haley Mourer posted the shutout. It was the Ladycats’ sixth straight shutout and they have outscored their opponents 15-0 in that span.

The Ladycats entered this week needing a win or tie to clinch a playoff berth. They were playing at Keller Fossil Ridge (11-6-1, 5-4) at press time and will host last-place Saginaw (2-12, 0-8) on Mar. 6 at 7:15 p.m.

Next week they end the regular season with matches at third-place Granbury (12-5-2, 5-1-2) on Mar. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and host runner-up Azle (12-7-3, 6-1-2) on Mar. 13 at 4:45 p.m.
