Ladycats compete at Georgetown

Behind a sterling defense and a standout performance from goalkeeper Drew Vozeh, the Aledo Bearcats (6-3-1) won the championship of the Crowley Tournament over the Jan. 16 weekend.

Vozeh surrendered a single goal as Aledo outscored its three opponents 10-1. They began with a 2-1 victory against Arlington Martin, followed by back-to-back 4-0 shutouts of Dayton and Montgomery Lake Creek.

Also, Trapper Davis scored a goal in each of Aledo’s victories.

In the win over Martin, Vozeh had a clutch save to preserve the win. Among his four saves was one from point blank range with 10 seconds remaining in the game. In all, he registered a dozen saves in the tourney.

Goals and assists (in parentheses) in the tournament for Aledo were:

  • Vs. Martin: Davis (Robby Sloan) and Evan Randriamahefa (Erik Soltow).
  • Vs. Dayton: Davis (Sloan), True Voskamp (Grant Gartman), Kyle Storck (Randriamahefa) and Kevin Nava (unassisted).
  • Vs. Lake Creek: Davis (Storck), Voskamp (Harrison Kear), Storck (Sloan), Grant Cambre (Voskamp).

“I was a little nervous going into the tournament as Martin is a historically solid 6A and I didn’t know much about the Houston schools except that Lake Creek was ranked number one in their region,” Bearcats coach Derek Vierling said. “I was definitely pleased with the results. The boys played well and rebounded from the two losses to Midlothian and Centennial (both by a single goal right before the tourney). We outscored our opponents 10-1, which is really good playing against unfamiliar competition.”

The Bearcats returned home on Tuesday, Jan. 20 to host Mansfield Summit, winning 6-0. The third straight shutout featured a combined effort in goal from Vozeh, Mark Graham, and Malachi Behrens.

Kear had a pair of goals off of assists from Sloan and Davis. Also, Davis scored on a penalty kick, Storck found the net with an assist from Trent Newton, Randriamahefa scored with an assist from Levi Clark, and Cambre took a feed from Clark for the final goal.

The Bearcats were hosting Fort Worth Trimble Tech at press time. They begin defense of their District 5-5A title on Jan. 27 at Brewer in a match that kicks off at 7:30 p.m.

Ladycats face some of state’s best

Playing in the prestigious Governor’s Cup tournament in Georgetown Jan. 15-17, the Aledo Ladycats (3-5) started with a 3-0 victory against Barber’s Hill before falling 3-1 to Midlothian Heritage and 2-0 to A&M Consolidated.

Heritage is ranked No. 18 in the state in Class 5A.

Ally Weimer, Avery Sands, and Ainsley Elmore each scored a goal against Barber’s Hill, while Weimer had two assists and Baylee Velarde had one. Weimer scored an unassisted goal against Heritage.

“Playing in the Governor’s Cup against two of the top teams in the state gave us exactly the level of competition we were looking for to help us learn,” first-year Ladycats coach Taylor May said. “While we went 1-2, our performance showed growth, toughness and a willingness to compete at a high level. The lessons learned will be important as we continue to develop and prepare for the rest of the season.

“We battled some injuries, and the players continued to fight and show what being an Aledo Ladycat means. We are all in all the time.”

The Ladycats were playing at Fort Worth Arlington Heights at press time and host White Settlement Brewer on Jan. 27 at 7:15 p.m. as Aledo begins defense of its District 5-5A championship.
