Bearcats win 17th straight meet

Ladycats narrowly miss title

Posted

It was almost a sweep for Aledo's teams at the Northwest Texan Invitational in Haslet on Friday, March 1.

The Bearcats won for a 17th consecutive regular-season meet, while the Ladycats narrowly missed joining them in the winners' category. The Aledo girls scored 164 points, just two behind meet champion Haslet Eaton with 166.

“Eaton is really good. We had to play catch-up,” Ladycats coach Michael Pinkerton said.

The Bearcats tallied 157 points to easily outdistance runner-up Eaton with 94 and third-place Northwest with 93. What’s more, the Bearcats are still winning despite graduating a core of athletes who were at the heart of this streak.

“Early graduation has taken a toll on the track team. We lost five really fast guys that graduated early for football and are not running this year,” Bearcats coach Andrew Clark said. “It has left the JV really depleted, but we have some freshmen running good times and getting faster every week.

“I would also expect our varsity times to start dropping as well, making a few moves and got some additions out of basketball that will be ready to run this week at the Bearcat Relays.”

Vincent Luffey, Jack Fink, Evan Thompson and Bradley Campbell won individual gold medals for the Bearcats. The Aledo boys also won the 4x100-meter relay.

Lauren St. Peters won two gold medals in the discus and shot put for the Ladycats, as did Sofia Brandenburg in the 800 and 1600. Also winning gold for the Aledo girls were Addison Smith, Mykel Murry, Molly Garrison and Taylor Hindman. The Ladycats also won gold in the 4x400 relay.

Aledo was hosting the Bearcat Relays at press time.
