The Bearcats, now 14-3 overall, improved to 7-0 in District 5-5A. They have outscored their opponents 49-0 during the win streak and 38-0 in league play.
“We are playing really well offensively, which helps out the defensive side of the ball,” Bearcats coach Derek Vierling said. “Our opponents are collapsing on themselves, and when they clear the ball our back line is playing so high that they just redistribute it back into the attacking third. It becomes a vicious circle for our opponents.”
Drew Vozeh and Mark Graham combined as goalkeepers in both shutouts. Vozeh has 7.5 shutouts this season and Graham has four.
In the win over Brewer (5-9-2, 1-3-2), Robby Sloan scored the opening goal, dribbling through four defenders and slotting it past the goalkeeper. Calvin Gruber scored twice in a four-minute span, both off of assists from Kyle Storck. Harrison Kear and True Voskamp each scored off rebounds, and Trent Newton scored off a corner kick from Trapper Davis.
In defeating Azle (5-12-3, 1-5-1), Sloan again got the scoring started, dribbling a deflection 40 yards around and through several defenders. He now has three goals this season with two in the past two games.
Davis scored on a pair of free kicks around a wall of defenders. Gruber scored and assisted on two other goals, his goal coming off an assist by Kear. Storck found the net on a rebound shot that bounced off the keeper.
The Bearcats were off this past Tuesday and will visit Chisholm Trail (3-11-1, 3-2-1) on Friday, Feb. 27. Next week they have a home game against Fossil Ridge (5-6-4, 22-3) on March 3 and visit Saginaw (8-3-2, 5-1) on March 6.
Wins in all three games will clinch the district championship for Aledo. Wins in two games will secure a playoff berth.
