The Bearcats won both games by the score of 10-0, ending the game against the Panthers after six innings and the game against the Rough Riders after five innings due to run-rule.
Aledo had beaten Fossil Ridge in five innings only two days earlier so the team came in with a lot of confidence, but still had to perform.
In the second inning, the Bearcats got on the board with a two-out rally. Kyle Poindexter hit an RBI single. Kaler Mazon followed with an RBI triple. Connor Whitmire drove him in next at-bat with a double to right field. It was followed up with leadoff hitter Wilson Sehnem hitting an RBI single. Aledo led 4-0.
In the third inning, Will Cayce drove in one run on a double to improve the lead to 5-0. Unfortunately, despite having runners on third and second base with no outs, Aledo couldn’t rack up more runs.
In the fourth inning, Lucas Nawrocki hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field that scored one run. Unfortunately, Aledo made a base running error as Fossil Ridge rallied to get the inning-ending double-play at second base. The Bearcats led 6-0.
In the fifth inning, Mazon hit an RBI double to increase Aledo’s lead to 7-0.
In the sixth inning, Nawrocki drove in two runs on a double. He was followed by Cayce, who hit an RBI single to end the game.
Aledo won 10-0.
Nawrocki led the team with three RBIs. Cayce and Mazon both drove in two runs. The team finished with 13 hits, six for extra bases, and drew four walks.
On the mound, Luke Sandefur pitched four innings and allowed zero runs on one hit while striking out five and walking one. Dane Browne pitched in relief and allowed no runs or hits through two innings while striking out four batters and walking one.
Coach Chad Barry did not like some of the base running decision-making that he saw, but there was plenty to like as Aledo moved on to play the first game of its series at Saginaw.
The Bearcats started with a bang against the Rough Riders. Barnes hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to get Aledo going early. Later in the inning, Poindexter drove in one run with a single as the Bearcats led 3-0.
Nawrocki got the start on the mound and the beginning was not ideal. After a leadoff walk, a bunt he fielded resulted in an error as he tried to throw the runner out at second base. He had runners at the corners with no outs.
Nawrocki got out of that predicament by striking out two of the next three batters and fielding a bunt that held up the runners.
Aledo was able to load the bases up with only one out in the second inning, but could not get any runs home as two hard-hit balls landed in outfielders’ gloves. In the third inning, the Bearcats had two runners on base with two outs as Sehnem came through with a two-RBI double to improve Aledo’s lead to 5-0.
The Bearcats added one run in the fourth inning as Reid Huffman hit into a fielder’s choice that drove in one run to make it 6-0.
The fifth inning was where Aledo put the game away. Sehnem hit an RBI double, followed by Gladchuk, who drove him in despite grounding out. A few batters later, Dylan Duran and Huffman hit back-to-back RBI singles to improve the Bearcats’ lead to 10-0.
Nawrocki, who had not allowed a hit as most Saginaw batters seemed too scared to even swing at most of his pitches, struck out the final three batters to complete his no-hitter.
Aledo won 10-0 after five innings.
Sehnem drove in three runs to lead the team as he hit two doubles. Barnes drove in two runs on his home run while leading the team with three hits. Huffman also drove in two runs.
As a team, the Bearcats finished with 11 hits, five being extra-base hits, to go with four walks and four hit batters.
Nawrocki allowed no runs or hits through five innings while striking out 12 batters and walking three.
Barry was pleased overall with his team’s performance. He liked how Nawrocki bounced back from his rough first two batters to no-hit the team. Offensively, he liked the production and could live with several outs being what he called, “loud outs,” or hard hit balls that just happened to be hit right at a fielder.
With two 10-0 run-rule victories, there would appear to be little for Barry and his staff to correct, but Barry and the team know they are not just trying to win these district games, but prepare themselves for hopefully another state title run.
“I look for things we can improve upon as we get ready to move forward,” Barry said. “I tell them all the time, it is not about now, it is about the future. We need to eliminate these mistakes and be aware of them now so they don’t bite us a month from now.”
Aledo is next scheduled to play at 7 p.m. on April 7 at home against Saginaw. On April 8, the Bearcats have a non-district game against Birdville scheduled for 11 a.m. at home.
Aledo plays fellow undefeated in district team Granbury on April 14 at 7 p.m. at home.
