Bearcats rout Euless Trinity

First win of season comes as district looms

Posted

Even some of the Aledo Bearcats' staunchest fans were expressing concern  after an 0-2 start to the football season..

The Bearcats did a lot to erase those concerns after a 31-7 road win over the Euless Trinity Trojans on Friday, Sept. 11..

The Bearcats started off slow, with quarterback Tre Williams being intercepted just three plays into the game. However, the ensuing Trinity drive saw the Bearcats force a turnover-on-downs in their own territory.

Wide receiver Kane Lanier credited that specific fourth-down stop as where the momentum shifted in the game.

“Stopping them in the redzone after we threw the pick on the first drive was real momentum,” Lanier said. “We knew the defense had our back, and we were able to go out and play, and be loose and free.”

With 6:50 left in the first quarter, Aledo broke its first-quarter-scoreless streak with Lanier catching a 22-yard touchdown pass from Williams. Following another defensive stand, kicker Hudson Parks increased the Bearcats’ lead to 10-0 with a 29-yard field goal with 3:28 left in the first.

Following a missed field goal by the Trojans early in the second, Bearcats running back Wyatt Dorsey rushed for a 10-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 17-0 at the 8:29 mark.

Aledo’s defense continued to turn in a strong performance in the quarter, making way for the second touchdown connection from Williams to Lanier with 1:49 left in the half, this time for 29 yards.

After taking a 24-0 lead into halftime, Aledo started the third quarter with Williams’ third touchdown of the night. He hooked up with Colby Thompson from 10 yards out.

Williams spotlighted his teammates for their individual contributions to winning the game.

“Kane Lanier, he had an amazing game, obviously. But none of this would’ve happened without my offensive line, my coaching staff, and my defense. Everyone on that defensive side of the ball did amazing; everyone on the offensive side of the ball did their job, and that’s why we won,” Williams said.

Cornerback Jordan Hall added in a contribution of his own with an interception of Trojans QB Mack Lineweaver in the third quarter.

The Bearcats can take the momentum gained from this week’s win into next week when they travel to Granbury to take on the Pirates in the first game of district competition.

“It’s always good to get that first victory,” head coach Robby Jones said. “We’ve been in this situation before. Moving up to 6A, all of the games are gonna be difficult. We’ve just gotta keep our composure about us. Our kids accepted those two losses, took them to heart, learned from them and came out with a good result tonight.”
