Bearcats, Ladycats top 5-5A preview

Posted

If the recent preview tournament is an indication - and it is - the Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats are poised to once again dominate the golf competition in District 5-5A.

Competing against other teams from the district at Sugar Tree Golf Course on Oct. 11, the Aledo Black and Orange teams for both the boys and girls took first and second in both divisions. The boys also had the top two individual finishers while the girls had the top five.

The Aledo Black squad had a team score of 303 to finish 11 strokes ahead of the Orange team among the boys. Braylon Mahanay’s 70 for the Black was top medalist, a shot ahead of runner-up Dylan Kiser of Orange.

The Ladycats Black quartet shot 346, 15 strokes better than Orange at 361. Kyla Morales of Black shot 80 for top medalist, with Sana’a Lemen of Black second at 82, Sara Michaelis of Orange third at 84, Madison Warner of Black fourth with an 88 and Karlee Shaw fifth with a 90.

Also playing for the Bearcats Black were Jett Moore, 76, fifth individually; Ethan Elmore, 78, tied for sixth; and Helton Mossiello and Grayson Freeman, 79 each, tied for ninth.

Also for Aledo boys Orange were Logan Ban, 78, tied for sixth; Jake Phillips, 79, tied for ninth; Bradon Stokes, 86, 14th; and Hudson Knox, 94.

Reagan Gilliland shot 93 for Aledo Orange girls to place seventh individually and Abby Gray posted a 94 for eighth. For Black, Emily Crick shot 96 to tie for 11th and Kennedy Parker came in at 97 for 14th.

“Kids played well on a course that can reach out and get you if you’re not in good shape off the tee. As a team overall, for both guys and girls, we played good,” coach Brian Mourning said. “We had some kids that struggled a little bit, but we also had some that played really well.  It was a great opportunity for our kids to play a course that will host our district tournament and do well.”

The boys varsity Orange will compete in the Mansfield High School Tournament Oct. 28-29 at Squaw Valley in Glen Rose, followed by both Black and Orange wrapping up the fall schedule in the Pioneer Invitational Nov. 4-5 at Iron Horse in Fort Worth.

The girls Orange will host the Battle of the Creek at Squaw Creek on Oct. 27 and will conclude the fall at the Burleson Centennial Tournament at Southern Oaks in Burleson. The girls Black will compete in the State Preview Tournament Nov. 4-5 at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown and wrap up fall at the Lady Tiger Invitational at Texarkana Country Club.
