Aledo comes into district having posted four consecutive shutouts and having outscored their past five opponents 18-1. Overall this season they have outscored their opponents 28-12 in 11 games and have held their foes to a single goal or less in nine games.
“Four shutouts in a row and one goal over five games means we have finally settled on our back line and developed some experience with some subs for the back line, plus our top two goalkeepers are playing well,” Bearcats coach Derek Vierling said. “However, district is a whole new season, especially for Aledo, where most of the schools were beat handily by our football team, so every game is a rivalry for us - especially with Brewer, where we always get their best efforts.”
The Bearcats come into district with almost twice as many wins as the next closest teams (Brewer and Azle at 4-7-2). Only Aledo and Saginaw (3-2-2) posted winning records in predistrict, with Keller Fossil Ridge at 3-4-1, Granbury and 4-6 and Saginaw Chisholm Trail (0-9) still looking for its first win.
In their most recent shutout, a 2-0 win at home against Fort Worth Trimble Tech on Jan. 22, Aledo goalkeepers Mark Graham and Drew Vozeh combined for the blanking. Trapper Davis and Trent Newton each scored a goal, with Robby Sloan assisting on each.
Following their match against Brewer, the Bearcats at home to Chisholm Trail on Tuesday, Feb. 3 and visit Fossil Ridge on Feb. 6, both games starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Ladycats come into district looking to break a three-game losing streak, with two of the losses coming to some of the state’s toughest competition in the Georgetown Governor’s Cup Tournament. Their final predistrict contest was a 3-1 loss at Fort Worth Arlington Heights on Jan. 22.
The Ladycats have surrendered just 14 goals this season, but have only mustered nine. Five times they’ve given up a goal or less, with all three of their wins being shutouts.
Fossil Ridge (6-2-1) enters district with the best overall record, while Granbury (7-4) has the most wins. Azle (6-6-1) broke even in pre-district, while Chisholm Trail (3-7-2 and Saginaw (2-4) round out the league.
Next week, the Ladycats visit Chisholm Trail on Feb. 3 and host Fossil Ridge on Feb. 6, both games kicking off at 7:15 p.m.
