Those many seasons also now include more than 600 victories, a milestone reached this past week.
It has now officially been longer than a month since the Aledo Bearcats surrendered a goal to an opponent. The last time it happened was in a 2-1 win over Arlington Martin en route to the championship of the Crowley Tournament.
Ever since it’s been zero, zip, nada, nuttin.’ However you want to say it, Aledo has posted nine consecutive shutouts entering this week, including wins of 2-0 at home against Saginaw on Feb. 10 and 6-0 at Granbury on Feb. 13.
The win against Saginaw was the 600th of Vierling’s career.
“I have been blessed to be around some really talented players and teams, plus I have coached for a really long time, especially at Aledo,” Vierling said. “Aledo is an incredible place to coach. I am very lucky and extremely humbled to have been here.”
The Bearcats (12-3 overall) improved to 5-0 in District 5-5A, a game ahead of Saginaw, while Granbury (4-10-1, 0-4-1 in district) continues to look for a league victory. During their nine-game shutout streak Aledo has blanked its opponents 38-0.
They’ve also won 10 straight games after a slow start to the season.
In the win over Saginaw, Drew Vozeh got the shutout as goalkeeper. Kyle Storck and Trapper Davis scored goals with assists from Trent Newton and Grant Gartman.
A trio of goalkeepers combined for the shutout against Granbury. Vozeh was joined in goal by Mark Graham and Malachi Behrens.
Scoring-wise, Storck had a hat trick (three goals) with assists from Harrison Kear twice and Davis. Kear also scored off of an assist from Storck, Davis had a goal as Robert Sloan assisted, and Grant Cambre’s unassisted goal ended the night.
Aledo led 3-0 as the game was only 13 minutes old, building their advantage to 4-0 at the half and 5-0 four minutes in the second half.
“We were able to get a lot of the younger guys in and get some experience while resting the starters,” Vierling said.
The Bearcats were concluding the first half of league play at home against Azle (5-10-3, 1-3-1 in district) at press time. They host Brewer (5-8-2, 1-2-2) on Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m., whom they defeated 3-0 on the road on Jan. 31.
Next week they are at Saginaw Chisholm Trail (1-11, 1-2) on Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m., whom they downed 8-0 at home on Feb. 3.
