Bearcats dominate tournament

Aledo, the defending Class 5A Division I state champions, improved to 11-1. They outscored their opponents 43-1 in six games in this tournament and outhit their foes 58-22, which included a one-hitter, a two-hitter, and a four-hitter.

The Bearcats posted five consecutive shutouts, defeating Frisco Lone Star 8-0, Guyer 6-0, Flower Mound 7-0, Keller 9-0, and Lubbock Cooper before Byron Nelson finally scored in the sixth inning of a 5-1 loss. In all, Aledo had 35 straight innings without giving up a run.

Leading the Bearcats offensively were Wilson Sehnem (nine hits, two doubles, home run, four RBI) and Lucas Nawrocki (eight hits, two home runs, triple, nine RBI). Nawrocki also had a pitching victory in which he gave up one hit, a walk, no runs, and struck out 10 in four innings.

“We have never had a tournament that we put that many good quality games together in a row like we did,” Bearcats coach Chad Barry said. “I was very pleased for the team. I told them we had never gone undefeated in that tournament. I could not be happier with their overall performance as a team.

“Everyone really played well. But baseball is baseball, and every day is a new day and you can’t get caught up in all the accolades this early in the year. There is still a lot of baseball left. There are areas we need to refine in our game.”

The Bearcats are one of several schools to be hosting the Drew Medford Memorial Tournament this weekend, Mar. 5-7. Medford was a 2016 Paschal High graduate who was set to pitch for TCU before being killed in an automobile accident in August of that year.

Aledo will begin defense of its District 5-5A title on Mar. 11 when the Bearcats host Brewer at 7 p.m. They will then play at Brewer at 7 p.m. on Mar. 13.

Following spring break, the Bearcats return to action with a non-district game at Northwest on Mar. 21 at 1 p.m.
