Baseball: Bearcats land five on TSWA All-State

Posted

A couple months ago, the Aledo Bearcats won the second state baseball championship in the program’s history, defeating Smithson Valley 8-1 in the Class 5A Division I final at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

Now, five members of this season’s Bearcats have been honored as part of the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 5A All-State Team.

Three Bearcats were named to the first team: senior pitcher Devin Miller, junior relief pitcher Luke Sandefur, and junior designated hitter Lucas Nawrocki. Third-team accolades went to junior second baseman Landon Barnes, with senior outfielder Luke Trager receiving honorable mention.

The Bearcats finished 34-8, tying the team record set by the 2014 squad for most victories in a season. Their state title this season was won on June 5, 11 years to the day after they claimed the first one.

The coach for both was Chad Barry.

En route to winning state this season, the Bearcats went 11-2 in the playoffs. They were forced to a third game in bi-district by Birdville, winning Game 3 by a 6-0 score, and again went three games against Colleyville Heritage in the fourth round, winning the deciding game 13-2.

They also won District 5-5A with a perfect 10-0 record. Overall, they won 23 of their final 25 games.

Pair of Eagles honored

Two members of the Brock Eagles landed spots on the TSWA Class 4A All-State Team.

In fact, one of the Eagles was honored twice as senior Jesse Rusinek was named first team outfielder and second team pitcher. Also selected for the first team was junior pitcher Evan O’Connor.

Brock finished 30-5 and reached the Class 4A Division II state semifinals in its first season after moving up from 3A, falling to eventual state champion Longview Spring Hill.
