In a meet that gave them a chance to look at some of their District 5-5A opponents, the Aledo boys and girls swim teams each placed second at the Granbury Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 6.
Aledo and Granbury are perennial powers in the district and regularly send competitors to regional and state competition. In this meet, Granbury girls won with 89 points to second place Aledo’s 45, while the Pirates also took first with 74 points to 38 for Aledo.
Rounding out the boys standings were Class 5A Burleson, 29 points; 5A Joshua, 15; and 6A Weatherford, 8.
Also among the girls, Burleson was third with 18 points; Joshua, 8; and Weatherford, 4.
Aledo swimmers won four gold medals, two individual and two relays. Individually, Julia Gordy won the girls 50-yard freestyle and Brayden DeBoer won the boys 100 butterfly.
Each also swam on winning relays. Gordy joined Sydni Kellam, Stella Morris, and Ava Curnutt on the 200 medley relay, while DeBoer teamed with Reed Tomlin, Michael Spillers, and Jaxon Robinson to win the 400 free relay.
“This meet was a great chance to see where some of our district, regional, and maybe soon-to-be district opponents are sitting at this point in the season,” Aledo coach Meghan Roberson said. “Granbury is always fun to race, and as the reigning district champs, they set a tough bar.
“We were missing a few key swimmers this weekend, but I’m really encouraged by how we stacked up despite the loss. Getting solid wins over Burleson and Joshua — both regional opponents — is a good sign for where we’re headed. I feel confident that when we’re racing at full strength, Aledo will absolutely hold its own.”
Aledo swimmers are wrapping up the first part of the season in the Ivonen Meet hosted by the Arlington School District on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Arlington ISD Natatorium.
