Aledo splits with Brewer in soccer

Posted

The Aledo High School soccer teams played host to Brewer on Tuesday, Feb. 7 with mixed results. The Ladycats (9-4-1 overall, 3-1 in District 5-5A) won their match in dominant fashion, 6-0. Meanwhile, Aledo’s Bearcats (8-3-4 overall, 2-2 in District 5-5A) fell to the Bears, 4-1.

In the opening match of the night the Ladycats were able to find the back of the net in the first half to take a slim, 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Coming out of halftime, however, Aledo’s team went on a scoring frenzy, posting five goals.

“They played well,” Ladycats head coach Bryan Johnson said after the match. “We scored off two corners. A couple set pieces, that’s always pretty nice for us. We got our first shutout. We got a clean sheet for our keeper.”

Harper Smith led the Ladycats in scoring with a pair of goals to her credit in the match. Ally Wells, Sydney Mcguire, Reagan Krajca, and Emery Thompson all added a goal to the Aledo effort, as well.

On the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Jamie Smith made four saves to keep the goal clean for the Ladycats, giving the team their first shutout of the season.

In the nightcap, scoring came at a premium for most of the first half between Brewer and the Bearcats. With just more than three minutes left until halftime the Bears finally got on the board with the first goal of the game.

Just 35 seconds later Adrian Solis tied the game back up for the Bearcats when he scored on a breakaway to make the tally 1-1 with 2:24 left in the first half.

The score didn’t stay that way for long, however, as Brewer tacked on another quick goal with 1:52 left in the first half.

Coming out of halftime trailing 2-1, Aledo’s offense struggled to threaten the Bears. Brewer, on the other hand, managed to add two more goals in the final 40 minutes of play to produce the final score.

“[Brewer] played really well,” said head coach Derek Vierling. “They’re battling for first place right now. It knocks us down a little bit [in the standings]. So, well done to them.”

Both Aledo soccer teams travel to Azle on Friday, Feb. 10 to take on the Hornets. Kickoff for the Ladycats game is slated for 5 p.m. The Bearcats will play directly after.
