They qualified through their performances at the Class 5A Region I Meet on May 1-2 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
For senior Molly Garrison of the Ladycats, this will be a return trip as she won both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs in Lubbock. A year ago she finished third in the state in the former and sixth in the latter.
She will be joined by Ladycat sophomore Addie Fields and Bearcat junior Tyler Connelly, both making their state track and field debut. Fields won the pole vault with a career-best clearance of 12 feet, a foot more than her fourth-place regional vault. Connelly finished second in both the 1600 and 3200.
As a team, the Ladycats finished second in the regional meet, scoring 60 points. Mansfield Timberview won with 106.
“I thought the girls really competed well. They gave it everything they had, and we came away with two state qualifiers and many PRs,” Ladycats coach Mike Pinkerton said. “I’m so proud of the way they competed, as well as how they prepared for the meet.”
The Ladycats had four other athletes who narrowly missed earning a spot at state with third-place finishes. They were Sofia Brandenburg in the 800, Holland Gladchuk in the 1600 and 3200, and Sawyer Voight in the long jump.
The top two finishers in each event at regionals automatically qualified for state, along with the top third-place finisher from across all four regions. None of the four Ladycats who placed third qualified as wild cards.
Bearcats coach Andy Clark shared optimism following a regional meet that saw only one senior boy compete for Aledo, Lincoln Tubbs.
“Regionals went good,” Clark said. “We took a bunch of young kids who PR’d. That’s all you can ask for.”
The Class 5A State Track and Field Meet is May 15 at the University of Texas in Austin.
