Aledo qualifies plenty for area

Ladycats capture another district title

Posted

As has become the norm over the years, Aledo was the dominant overall program in district track and field. Three of the four teams captured the District 5-5A championship at Buchanan Stadium on April 9-10, while the other placed second.

The Ladycats scored 215 points to easily outdistance runner-up Azle with 92 to win the varsity girls division for a second straight year. The Bearcats finished with 146 points, bested only Keller Fossil Ridge with 172.

At the junior varsity level, the Aledo girls tallied 231 points with Fossil Ridge second with 169. Meanwhile, the JV Bearcats posted 194 points to 135 for runner-up Saginaw Chisholm Trail.

The top four finishers in each varsity event qualified to compete in the Area 5/6-5A April 17 at Denton Braswell High School. From there, the top four in each event move on to the 5A Region I Meet at Texas Tech University in Lubbock May 1-2.

At regionals, the top two in each event qualify for state at the University of Texas in Austin May 14-16, along with the top third-place finisher in each event across all four regions as a wild card.

In all, Aledo qualified 33 athletes (18 girls, 15 boys) for area competition.

“I could not be prouder of the way these young ladies competed. One look at the team scores and you will see what I mean,” Ladycats coach Mike Pinkerton said. “We are peaking at the right time, with several season PRs (personal records) at District. Both the Varsity and JV excelled.

“Now, for the Varsity, it is on to area this Friday. The competition will be tougher, but I’m sure we will be up to the challenge. A huge shout out to all of our coaches who have worked tirelessly to get these girls ready.”

Sawyer Voight for the Ladycats and Isaac Brooks for the Bearcats led all qualifiers by advancing in four events each, while Ladycats Alexa Plantz and Mykel Murry qualified in three events each, as did Bearcat Cooper Hull.

Molly Garrison won two gold medals in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs as she and Holland Gladchuck posted a 1-2 finish in each event. Garrison advanced to state in both events last season, finishing third in the 1600.

The Ladycats also had a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault with Claire Campbell, Addie Fields and Kara Overstreet.

Tyler Connelly also won two gold medals for the Bearcats, finishing first in the 1600 and 3200.
